Department of Motor Vehicles: Crash (accident) reports

Motor Vehicle Accident Indemnification Corporation
MVAIC is a non-profit organization created by the New York State Legislature to provide no-fault and bodily injury coverage to NY residents involved in a crash who don’t otherwise have automobile insurance. See our FAQs page for more information on coverage through MVAIC.
Chapter 71 of New York laws governs vehicle registration, driver’s licenses, and more. Title 6 covers Accidents and Accident Reports. In particular, Section 605 deals with the obligation to submit a report (MV-104 Report of Motor Vehicle Accident) to the DMV after a crash.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
The IIHS is an independent, nonprofit, scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes by conducting research and educating consumers, policymakers and safety professionals. You’ll find information here on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving, drinking and driving, speeding, teen drivers and older drivers, airbags, child safety and more.
AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety
The AAA FTS conducts research on many aspects of traffic safety, including driver behavior and performance issues such as drowsy or distracted driving; emerging technologies like driver-assist features and autonomous vehicles; roadway systems and driver issues such as road construction zone safety; and vulnerable road users, including older drivers, novice drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.
The Roadway Safety section of this website provides resources to encourage safer drivers, information on the latest in vehicle safety design and technology, topics related to safe speeds and road design, post-crash care for accident victims, and more, with the goal of reaching zero roadway deaths by 2050.
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
The Transportation Safety section of the CDC website provides strategies for preventing injuries and deaths, with topics addressing child passengers, teen drivers, older adult drivers, seat belts and restraints, impaired driving, distracted driving, pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. You can also follow a link to fact sheets on the cost of motor vehicle crash deaths, seat belts and restraints, and alcohol-impaired driving in New York.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
Find out about vehicle safety recalls, including child car seats and tires. Enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see if your vehicle is subject to recall. Find safety information on topics including speeding, seat belts, distracted driving, and drunk driving.
